Greetings, and today I thought I'd look back at three different posts from three different incarnations of my blog.
Part 1 focuses on a game that shaped my traditional role-playing game Dungeon Master 'career' - and not only that, over time gave me the voice I write with today, and opened up my imagination to such wonderous stories and tales for my players to lose themselves within.
It's incredible to think three decades have rolled by since that day when I purchased the Dragon Warrior book series in paperback. Dungeons & Dragon snobs scoffed at it, dismissed the system as "too basic" - but that was the attraction for me. No clutter of rule-upon-rule for players, or myself to get bogged down in. It was a framework, and one that worked beautifully.
So, sit back, and enjoy this post from the earliest days of my blog, back when it originally started out as "The DM's Screen" and covered my first love of role-playing games in Dragon Warriors - My Game of Choice.
I like to think of this posting as a testament to the simplicity and freedom the Dragon Warriors gave to the newbie player and DM alike, avoiding the intimidating tomes of Dungeons & Dragons - although good - that put off many players from growing into gifted Dungeon Masters.
For without this basic, yet evocative creation of the imagination by Dave Morris & Oliver Johnson, set in the Dark Ages Britain, I would never have found my path - and voice - as Dungeon Master, for which I shall be eternally grateful.
To close, a song from the year when I started running Dragon Warriors, 1987 — Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” It feels like it belongs there.
